Our Town Tradition: Waco High/University Softball

(March 19, 2013) -- Waco High and University may be rivals, but the two schools came together Tuesday for a "Pink Out" softball game, to not only raise awareness for breast cancer, but to serve as a benefit for Lady Trojans head coach Jaime Villarrial's wife, Leigh Ann.

Leigh Ann was diagnosed with breast cancer last October. Eight rounds of chemotherapy followed for Leigh Ann, the last coming at the end of February. She now will have a double mastectomy done this Friday in Houston.

To offset the cost for the surgery, family friend and Lady Lions head coach Scott Taylor has started to raise money for the Villarrial's. Taylor organized a benefit concert and the "Pink Out" game, where items like t-shirts and wristbands were sold, with proceeds going to the family.

"It's nice for them to take the lead and do these things for us," Villarrial said. "But I think it's more than district foes, district rivals, it goes into relationships we have as friends and family, first."
