RG3 Goes 2nd Overall To Redskins

NEW YORK (April 26, 2012) -- Former Baylor Quarterback Robert Griffin III was drafted second overall by the Washington Redskins in the 2012 NFL Draft. Andrew Luck, former quarterback at Stanford, went number one overall to the Indianapolis Colts.

It was no surprise the Redskins selected the Heisman Trophy winning quarterback with the second pick. Redskins personnel openly said if Griffin III was available when they drafted, he would be selected.

On March 9, it was reported the Redskins would trade the rights to its first-round pick (No. 6 overall), its second-round pick this year, along with first round picks in 2013 and 2014 to the Rams for the rights to the No. 2 overall pick. The trade was made official on March 13.

Griffin III is the Redskins' highest draft pick since linebacker LaVar Arrington went at No. 2 in 2000. Arrington made three Pro Bowls in six seasons in Washington.

The Redskins hope Griffin can end their revolving door at the game's most important position. Washington has used 21 starting quarterbacks over the last 19 seasons.

Griffin III, the 2011 Heisman Trophy winner, was also named national player of the year by the AP and Sporting News, earned the Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award and was a consensus All-America selection.

Griffin III, who set or tied 54 school records in three full seasons at Baylor, finished the 2011 season with school records of 4,293 yards, 37 passing touchdowns and a passer efficiency rating of 189.5 (second-best in NCAA FBS history). RG3 led a powerhouse Baylor offensive attack that ranked second in total offense (587 ypg), fourth in scoring (45.3 ppg) and first in passing efficiency (191.2 rtg). RG3 finishes his collegiate career as one of three players in FBS history to top 10,000 career passing yards (school-record 10,366) and 2,000 career rushing yards (2,254).
