Sports Spotlight: Special Year For Axtell Runner

(May 12, 2013) -- The last track and field state champion in Axtell before dallas rushing was Brian Hand in 1987.
Since then rushing has lent a hand to his community and become somewhat of a celebrity.

"Celebrity, that's a misnomer," said Rushing. "The guys know I'm really personable, I like to have a good time, joke around. They also know I like to compete and I like to have fun with it."
"He loved every minute of that and he already set his goal when he did that last year to repeat again this year and to do it in more than one thing," said Axtell track and field coach Rusty Reynolds.

Shortly after winning that first state title, Rushing visited an elementary school to talk to the kids about goals and eating right.
He won the 1A cross country state title in November 2012 and took gold in the 3200 and 800 meters in 1A this year at the state track and field meet. He's on his way to Texas A&M in the fall.

"It's a great program. Pat Henry does an amazing job. Coach McRaven is a great recruiter and a great guy. They have great facilities and it is a great university," said Rushing. "We know we're student athletes, so student comes before the athlete. So look at education before the athletics."
"He's mentioned A&M before but I don't think he really knew that was a reality maybe until the beginning, middle of this year. His goal was to run at a division one college anyway, he's had that goal for a long time," said Reynolds. "And it's really cool that it's A&M and somewhere close and he can represent our small town in that way."

From winning his first state title to setting a 1A state record in the 800 meters, it's been quite the year for Rushing.

"You're not promised tomorrow ever but I want to say I went in with confidence. Just have to trust in a lot of things, your training, people around you and most definitely God, said Rushing. "So, that really, really helped me out."
