LUBBOCK (June 14, 2013) -- Texas Tech's hired four new coaches in the past year and three of them are former athletes.
Athletic director Kirby Hocutt said the hiring of Kliff Kingsbury has boosted ticket sales and for the first time in years united football fans, many of whom were still upset about the firing of Mike Leach in 2009.
Hocutt says he didn't go looking for alumni to coach football, baseball, and women's and men's basketball. He sought people who wanted to be at Texas Tech, understood West Texas and valued the school's academics and athletics.
The other alums are Tim Tadlock in baseball and Candi Whitaker in women's basketball. The lone outsider is Tubby Smith, who was hired to replace Billy Gillispie.
