Belton (July 18, 2013) -- Three University of Mary Hardin-Baylor football players have been named to Preseason All-America Teams released by three different publications. The Cru is represented on Preseason All-America squads published by Lindy’s Sports, the Sporting News and Beyond Sports Network.
Defensive tackle Silvio Diaz was named to the Lindy’s Sports Preseason All-America First Team. Diaz, a senior from Leander High School, is coming off a 2012 season that saw him record 17 tackles for loss and nine quarterback sacks. He posted 58 total tackles, forced one fumble, recovered another and broke up two passes. Diaz led UMHB in sacks and tackles for loss and led all Cru defensive linemen in tackles last year.
Offensive tackle Montana Duncan was named to the Sporting News All-America First Team. Duncan, a senior from Mineola High School, is the highest-grading returner on the UMHB offensive line. He helped clear the way for a Cru rushing attack that averaged 296.2 yards per game and 5.8 yards per attempt last season. UMHB allowed just 15 quarterback sacks and averaged 523.2 yards of total offense per contest.
Diaz and punter/kicker Chad Peevey were both voted to the Beyond Sports Network Preseason All-America squad. Diaz was named to BSN’s Second Team. Peevey, a senior from St. Joseph’s High School in Bryan, was named to the Third Team as a punter. Peevey averaged 41.6 yards per punt last season and had 15 kicks of 50 or more yards. He put 10 of those boots inside the opponents’ 20-yard line. Peevey also handled place-kicking duties for UMHB and finished with 106 total points. He hit 10-20 field goals and went 76-80 on extra point tries.
The UMHB football team went 13-1 last season and won the American Southwest Conference Championship for the eighth straight year. The Cru advanced to the National Semifinals before falling to eventual National Champion Mount Union. UMHB expects to return 46 lettermen, five offensive starters and eight defensive starters from that team this season.
