PINEVILLE, La. (April 27, 2013) -- The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team split an American Southwest Conference doubleheader against Louisiana College Saturday in Pineville, earning a 4-1 win over the Wildcats in the first game and dropping the second 5-3. The Wildcats improve to 24-17 on the season and advance to face Texas Lutheran in the championship round of the ASC tournament, hosted by U.T.-Tyler, next weekend. The Cru ends its season at 21-21 overall and 10-8 in conference action.
UMHB used a pair of home runs in the first game of the day to take a 4-2 win over the Wildcats. Tyler Taute hit his second home run of the season in the bottom of the second for a 1-0 lead for the Cru. Louisiana College put one on the board in the top of the fourth before Garrett Webb responded for UMHB with an RBI double in the bottom of the sixth, which turned into an in-the-park home run after two errors by the Wildcats and gave the Cru a 3-1 advantage. Chris Florack scored in the bottom of the seventh off an error by the Wildcats for a 4-1 lead. Louisiana College added one more run in the top of the ninth but could not muster enough offense to catch the Cru, giving UMHB the 4-2 win and evening the series at 1-1. Webb led UMHB with two hits while five other Crusaders recorded one. Chance Ryan went eight innings on the mound, striking out seven batters and allowing just four hits. Ryan extended his UMHB career-record wins to 24 while Sam VanHoozer extended his career-record saves to 11. UMHB had seven hits and three errors in the game while the Wildcats recorded five hits and five errors.
After three consecutive leadoff singles, Webb got UMHB on the scoreboard first in the second game with an RBI single, scoring Will Stafford in the top of the third. Kyle Feazell responded for the Wildcats with a homerun over the left field wall in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game at 1. Louisiana College put up a three-count in the bottom of the sixth for a 4-1 lead before the Cru responded with two runs in the top of the eighth to close the Wildcats’ lead to 4-3. Louisiana College responded with a one-run eighth inning to secure the win at 5-3. Chase Burrow led the Cru with three hits while Webb had two and one RBI. UMHB totaled nine hits and three runs while the Wildcats had seven this and five runs.
The Cru ends its season at 21-21 under first-year head coach Ben Shipp. The Cru earned its sixth trip to the ASC Championship and first since 2010. Shipp, the winningest coach in UMHB baseball history, improved his overall record to 248-270-1. Florack, Seth Mogavero, Chance Ryan, Jeremy Sapp, Seth Stroder and Sam VanHoozer ended their careers at UMHB.
