(March 14, 2014) The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team used a pair of late inning rallies to post comeback victories as the Cru swept a doubleheader from Mississippi College Friday evening in Belton. UMHB took both games by 4-3 scores to improve to 12-2 overall and 9-2 in American Southwest Conference play on the year. Mississippi College drops to 5-10 overall and 4-7 in ASC play with the two losses.
UMHB used a late run to claim a 4-3 victory in game one. The Cru grabbed a 2-0 first inning lead on Rob Loewe’s RBI groundout and K.J. Stark’s sacrifice fly. Mississippi College used a three-run second inning to grab a 3-2 lead. UMHB tied the game on Zack Whiddon’s solo homer in the bottom of the third. It would stay that way into the bottom of the sixth. Stark led off with a walk and stole second, a hit batsman and wild pitch put runners on second and third before Tripp Reeves blooped a single over a drawn-in infield to score Stark with the go-ahead run. MC would put the first two hitters on base in the top of the seventh and both runners would move up on a sacrifice bunt. Aaron Barteau set down the last two hitters on ground balls to preserve the win and nail down his second save of the season. Nick Bergmann scattered five hits over six innings and struck out six to raise his record to 3-1 on the year. Whiddon had two of the Cru’s six hits in the win.
UMHB erupted for three runs in the bottom of the ninth to post a 4-3 walk-off win in game two. The Choctaws took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second, but the Cru tied the game on Chase Burrow’s RBI groundout in the bottom of the third. MC added single runs in the fourth and eighth, but had two runners thrown out at home and only took a 3-1 lead into the bottom of the ninth. Tyler Taute blasted a two-run double to tie the game with no outs, then following a strike out and a walk, Burrow drove a ball into the gap in left center to score the game-winning run and set off a wild UMHB celebration. Danny Horstman picked up the win in relief for the Cru to move to 1-0. Grady Turman took the loss for MC to drop to 2-2 on the year. Rob Loewe had two of UMHB’s seven hits and five Cru pitchers combined to hold the Choctaws to seven hits in the game.
The two teams will close out the series with a single game on Saturday at Red Murff Field. The start time for that game has been moved up to 11:00 AM due to concerns about the weather.
