UMHB Baseball Sweeps Sul Ross State

BELTON (April 6, 2013) -- The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team swept the final day of competition with the Sul Ross State Lobos, earning 10-5 and 11-4 wins over the Lobos. UMHB improves to 16-15 on the season and 8-7 in American Southwest Conference action while Sul Ross falls to 11-19 overall and 3-9 in conference play.

Sul Ross gained an early lead on UMHB with a run in the top of the second before UMHB responded with a two RBI single from Will Stafford. Sul Ross added three more runs and UMHB just one for a 4-3 lead after four innings, before the Cru used a big fifth inning to gain an edge on the Lobos. Zack Whiddon hit an RBI single to jump start the Cru offensively. Rob Loewe, Tyler Taute, Chris Florack and Stafford all added RBI to end the inning with a 10-4 lead. The Lobos would score just once more, giving UMHB the 10-5 victory. Stafford and Chase Burrow led the Cru with two hits each. Stafford also had a team-high three RBI. Danny Horstman earned the win on the Cru on the mound.

The Cru used a strong second inning to put distance on the Lobos, scoring four runs to add to an existing 2-1 lead. Rob Loewe hit his first home run of the season in the top of the fourth, giving UMHB a 7-2 lead. The Cru put three more runs on the board in the bottom of the sixth, extending the lead to 10-2. Sul Ross could not respond offensively, eventually falling 11-4 to UMHB. Seth Mogavero led the Cru with three hits, while Loewe and Taute each had two. Chance Ryan went seven innings on the mound, striking out 10 batters, allowing just four hits and three runs. UMHB had 12 hits and two errors in the game while the Lobos batted for five hits and three errors.

UMHB will return to action with a 7 p.m. game against Southwestern University on April 9th in Belton.
