Austin (March 28, 2013) -- The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team broke open a tight game with a five-run seventh inning as the Cru went on to a 7-0 victory over Concordia Texas Thursday night in Austin. UMHB improves to 12-13 overall and 5-5 in American Southwest Conference West Division play with the victory. The Cru also beats Concordia in Austin for the first time since the 2007 season. The loss drops the Tornados to 14-16 overall and 6-4 in the ASC West on the season.
The Cru took a 2-0 lead when Robert Loewe tripled home a run and came around to score on Tyler Taute’s RBI single in the top of the sixth inning. UMHB then broke the game open in the next inning. Zack Whiddon tripled home two runs and one batter later, Loewe added a two-run triple of his own. Loewe would score on Taute’s RBI double to push the lead to 7-0. Aaron Barteau pitched out of a bases loaded jam in the bottom of the eighth to keep Concordia scoreless.
Kreece Cooper allowed just one hit over six innings of work to raise his record to 2-2 on the year. Cooper struck out six to help overcome seven walks. Barteau tossed three innings of two-hit relief for his first save of the year, striking out four and walking just one. Loewe, Whiddon and Taute had two hits apiece to lead a nine-hit UMHB attack and all three players drove in at least two runs.
The two teams will close out the series with a 1:00 PM doubleheader tomorrow in Austin. UMHB will then continue its road trip with a 6:00 PM non-conference single game at Southwestern University next Tuesday in Georgetown.
The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team swept Sul Ross State in a conference doubleheader Thursday night in Belton, earning 6-0, 8-0 wins over the Lobos. The Cru improves to 13-13 on the season and 8-6 in American Southwest Conference action, while the Lobos fall to 7-17 overall and 2-8 in conference play.
Victoria Gomez opened scoring for the Cru with an RBI double in the top of the first innings. Kelsey Vann added to that with an RBI single, giving UMHB an early 2-0 lead. Kourtney Bevers added another RBI with a single, scoring Janie Neyland from second base. Gomez followed that with an RBI double scoring Bevers, followed by RBIs from Halle Sabo and Kelsey Vann to put the Cru up 6-0 after four and secure the win. Ragsdale earned the win for the Cru on the mound, striking out seven batters and allowing just five hits. Leanne Hinojosa and Gomez led the Cru with three hits each, while Gomez and Vann both had two RBI. UMHB totaled 12 hits and one error while Sul Ross recorded five hits and no errors.
The Cru got on the board first again in the second game when Hollie Chennault scored from third off a wild pitch in the bottom of the fourth. Dayton Kunz then scored off a bases-loaded walk before Leanne Hinojosa hit a three-RBI double to put UMHB up 6-0. Neyland and Bevers then recorded RBI singles in the bottom of the fifth to secure the 8-0 win. Sabo earned the win in the circle for the Cru striking out five batters and allowing just one hit. UMHB recorded 8 hits and one error in the game while the Lobos had one hit and one error.
The Cru will return to action tomorrow with a doubleheader against Sul Ross State beginning at 11 a.m. at Dee Dillon Field.
