BELTON (February 15, 2013) -- The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team worked out of a jam in the top of the tenth inning and then won the game on Zack Whiddon’s RBI single in the bottom of the frame in a 2-1 extra inning victory over Hendrix College Friday night in Belton. The Cru evens its record at 1-1 with the win. The loss drops the Warriors to 2-1 on the season.
UMHB grabbed a 1-0 lead when Whiddon scored on Seth Mogavero’s single in the bottom of the first inning. Hendrix would not get a runner past second base until the fourth inning and the Warriors finally tied the game on Matt Simmons’ RBI groundout in the top of the sixth. Hendrix put runners on second and third with one out in the eighth inning, but UMHB’s Ian Ekery used a groundout and flyout to end the threat. The Warriors had runners on first and third with two outs in the tenth, but Ekery caught the runner off first and the Cru threw out the potential go-ahead run at the plate trying to score on the ensuing rundown. In the bottom of the tenth, Chase Burrow led off with a pinch-hit single and he moved to second on a wild pitch. After a flyout to center field, Whiddon slapped a single up the middle and Burrow scored standing up for the walk-off win.
Whiddon had three hits for the Cru and Mogavero added two more to lead a nine-hit attack. Ekery (1-0) earned the win with three and a third innings of three-hit relief. He struck out two and did not walk a batter. Kreece Cooper started for UMHB and scattered three hits and struck out six in six innings.
Connor Schrank took the loss for Hendrix after entering the game in the bottom of the tenth. Jacob Perschke scattered seven hits and struck out 13 in nine innings of work for the Warriors. Collin Radack and Brady Newville had two hits apiece for Hendrix, but the Warriors were held to six total hits in the loss.
The two teams will close out the series with a 1:00 PM doubleheader at Red Murff Field on Saturday. UMHB will then host Trinity University for a non-conference game next Tuesday.
