UMHB Golfers in 3rd at Home Invite

GEORGETOWN (September 23, 2013) -- The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor men’s golf team fired its lowest round of the fall and the Cru is in third place after the opening round of the UMHB Fall Invitational Monday in Georgetown. The UMHB men are only behind two scholarship programs. The Cru posted a 298 team total and trails Tyler Junior College by 14 strokes after the Apaches carded a blistering 284 first-round total. Northwood University is in second place with a 296, just two shots ahead of UMHB. Hardin-Simmons fired a 303 for fourth place and the UMHB Gold team is tied with TAMU-Texarkana for fifth place at 306. Centenary College posted a 307 for seventh place, Concordia Texas is eighth with a 312, Louisiana College is in ninth place with a 315, Jacksonville College carded a 324 for tenth place and University of Dallas rounds out the field with a 398. The tournament is being played on a par-72, 7,050-yard layout at Cowan Creek Golf Course in Sun City.

Brian Kauffman posted the low individual round for the Cru with a 70 to tie for second place. Jarrod Brown is tied for fifth place after firing a 72. Pablo Mena Medrano’s 74 is good for a tie for 13th place, Robby Schimmels and Stayton Lindeman both recorded 75’s to tie for 17th place, Justin Judkins posted a 77 to tie for 24th and Scottie Brown shot 78 to tie for 30th place. Ryan Nolan is tied for 42nd after shooting 80, Ben Carr shot 81 to tie for 45th and Mason Wyatt shot 83 to tie for 49th. Brandon Rougeau of Tyler Junior College has the individual lead after shooting a 67.

The tournament wraps up with Tuesday’s final round. Teams will tee off with an 8:00 AM shotgun start.

The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women’s golf team is in third place after the opening round of the Lady Cru Fall Invitational, but the UMHB women trail only two scholarship programs after posting a sub-320 team score. The Cru posted a 318 team score and are nine shots off the pace set by first-round leader Tyler Junior College (309). Western Texas College is in second place with a 313 score. Southwestern University recorded a 323 for fourth place, Trinity University is fifth at 338, Schreiner University holds down sixth place with a 348 and UMHB’s #2 team is tied with U.C.-Santa Cruz for seventh place at 351. Hardin-Simmons University is in ninth place with a 366 and LeTourneau University shot 412 for tenth place. The two-day, 36-hole event is being played at Wildflower Country Club in Temple.

Elizabeth Davis fired the low individual round for UMHB, shooting 78 to tie for fifth place individually. Victoria Thane and Sara Eckert both posted 79’s and are tied for eighth, Ashley Garbade is tied for 15th after carding 82 and Taylor O’Rear is tied for 18th with an 83. Allison Holly shot 84 to tie for 21st place, Kelly Gonyea is tied for 30th with an 88, Kaley Jackson is tied for 33rd with an 89 and Emily Santos shot 90 to tie for 38th place. There is a three-way tie for the individual lead at 74 between Morgan Best of Tyler JC, Iben Hvass of Western Texas and Ali Walden of Southwestern University.

The tournament wraps up with Tuesday’s final round. Teams will tee off with an 8:30 AM shotgun start.
