UMHB Holds Steady At #2 In Both National Polls

Belton (October 22, 2012) -- The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor football team held its ground in both major national polls this week as the Cru remained #2 in the nation in both the American Football Coaches Association’s Top 25 and the D3football.com Top 25. UMHB has now been ranked second in the nation in both polls for six straight weeks.

The Cru grabbed one first place vote and 1,006 total points to hold steady at #2 in this week’s AFCA Top 25 Poll. Mount Union is ranked #1 with 41 first place votes and 1,049 total points. UMHB is the only American Southwest Conference program ranked in the top 25 this week, but Louisiana College is receiving votes this week. Wesley College climbed one spot to #5 in the country in the AFCA Top 25 Poll this week. The Cru has beaten Wesley and Louisiana College already this season.

The Cru also remained second in the country in the D3football.com Top 25 Poll. UMHB took one first place vote and 597 total points in that ranking. Mount Union took the other 24 first place votes and 624 total points to claim the #1 spot. Wesley College is also ranked fifth by D3football.com and Louisiana College is receiving votes in that poll.

“I think we’ve gotten better every week of the season until last week,” Cru head coach Pete Fredenburg said. “I think we may have taken a step back and we have addressed that with our players and coaches. We need to continue improving and learn from some of the mistakes we made last Saturday.”

UMHB is 7-0 overall on the season and 4-0 in ASC play after beating Hardin-Simmons 45-32 last Saturday in Belton. The Cru trailed 32-31 in the fourth quarter of that game before scoring the final 14 points. It was the first second-half deficit of the year for UMHB. The Cru is the only unbeaten team remaining in league play and controls its own destiny in the race for the conference crown and the ASC’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division III National Championships. UMHB will return to action with a 2:00 PM kickoff at Howard Payne University (1-6, 1-3 ASC) this Saturday in Brownwood.
