UMHB Men Wins With Buzzer-Beater Three Against Trinity

San Antonio (November 28, 2012) -- The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor men’s basketball team trailed by as many as ten points in the second half, but the Cru led when it mattered most, edging Trinity University 57-56 in overtime Wednesday night in San Antonio. James Allen buried a three-pointer as time expired to lift UMHB to the win and snap a two-game losing streak.

The Tigers built a 35-25 lead in the early going of the second half before the Cru defense clamped down. UMHB held Trinity to just 11 points in the final 15:54 of regulation and tied the game at 46 on Kitrick Bell’s lay-up with 1:01 left to play. Neither team would score again in regulation, sending the game to an extra period knotted at 46. An Allen three-pointer gave the Cru a 49-48 lead, but Trinity answered with a 5-0 run to go up 53-49. Two Thomas Orr free-throws and another Allen three-pointer put UMHB up 54-53 with 1:20 remaining in the game. Heath Hopson hit a jumper for Trinity to give the Tigers a 55-54 advantage with 68 seconds left and Zach Lambert hit a free-throw to make it 56-54 with 11 seconds left to play. Lambert missed his second free-throw and Cory Meals pulled down the rebound, setting up Allen’s last-second heroics.

Allen finished with 20 points on 5-10 shooting from three-point range. Bell had 14 points and Orr added nine points and a game-high 11 rebounds. UMHB shot 35 percent from the field and 30 percent from three-point range in the game.

Lambert led all scorers with 28 points for the Tigers. No other player had more than seven as UMHB held Trinity to 31 percent shooting from the field and 32 percent from beyond the arc,

The Cru is now 2-2 on the season and will return home to open American Southwest Conference play on Saturday. UMHB will host LeTourneau University for a 7:00 PM tip-off at the Mayborn Campus Center that day. Trinity falls to 2-3 on the season with the loss.
