Austin (November 3, 2012) -- The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor men’s basketball team could not overcome red-hot long-range shooting from St. Edward’s as the Cru fell to the Hilltoppers 95-69 in an exhibition game Saturday afternoon in Austin. The loss to the Division II program does not count in UMHB’s win-loss record.
St. Edward’s shot 60 percent from the field in the first half and went 13-23 from three-point range in building a 58-36 lead at the break. UMHB’s defense tightened in the second half, but the Cru could not overcome the big halftime deficit in the loss.
UMHB out rebounded the Hilltoppers 36-31 in the game, but the Cru shot just 39 percent from the field and went 2-9 from beyond the arc. St. Edward’s hot 52 percent from the field and went 19-38 from three-point range in the game.
Antoine Chaney led UMHB with 15 points and three steals. James Allen added 13 points and went 7-7 from the free-throw line. Kitrick Bell pulled down a game-high eight rebounds and Sheldon Jones and Jared Hamilton added five boards apiece.
Jeff Campbell topped five players in double figures with 16 points for St. Edward’s and he hit 5-7 from three-point land. Joseph Saldana added 15 points off the bench and Chris Wacker led the Hilltoppers with seven rebounds.
The UMHB men will officially open the 2012-13 season at home on November 20th. The Cru will host Southwestern University for a 7:30 PM tip-off in the second half of a women’s-men’s doubleheader that night.
