UMHB Men's Basketball Picked To Win ASC West Division

Belton (October 24, 2012) -- The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor men’s basketball team has been picked to successfully defend its American Southwest Conference West Division Championship in the league’s annual Preseason Coaches and Media Poll, released today. The Cru picked up 17 first-place votes and totaled 140 points in balloting of West Division coaches, sports information directors and media representatives.

Hardin-Simmons University is picked to finish second with three first-place votes and 122 total points. Concordia Texas totaled 102 points and took the other first place vote as the pick to finish third, Schreiner University (under the direction of former UMHB player and assistant coach Jimmy Smith) is picked fourth with 81 points, Texas Lutheran is picked fifth with 63 total points, Howard Payne is the choice at #6 with 43 total points and Sul Ross State is picked seventh with 37 total points.

Schreiner University sophomore center Travis Pflughaupt was voted ASC West Division Preseason Player of the Year. Pflughaupt averaged 17.2 points and 10.2 rebounds per game for the Mountaineers last season.

Defending ASC East Division champion U.T.-Dallas was a unanimous pick to successfully defend its East Division title with 21 first-place votes and 147 total points. UTD junior forward Kyle Schleigh was voted ASC East Division Preseason Player of the Year. Schleigh averaged 15.9 points and 8.1 rebounds per game for the Comets last season.

The Cru went 25-3 overall and 20-1 in ASC play last season and UMHB advanced to the NCAA Division III National Championships for the fifth time in the last six seasons. UMHB fell in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament after posting the best regular season and conference record in the program’s history. The Cru will tip off the 2012-2013 season with a home game against Southwestern University on November 20th.
