BELTON (August 19, 2013) -- The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor men’s soccer team has been picked to finish fourth in the American Southwest Conference in the league’s annual Preseason Coaches Poll. The Cru totaled 180 points in balloting of the league’s coaches and sports information directors after finishing tied for third in the league last season.
Mississippi College was picked to defend its conference championship with 229 points and 15 first-place votes. Texas-Dallas received five first-place nods and 209 points as the coaches’ choice to finish second. Texas-Tyler was predicted to finish third 205 points while Hardin-Simmons rounded out the top five with 164 points and two first-place votes. Louisiana College was picked to finish sixth with 118 points, East Texas Baptist’s 88 points predicted them seventh while Ozarks received 83 votes for eighth. Concordia Texas was ninth with 71 points, Howard Payne was 10th with 62 points and LeTourneau was picked 11th with 44 points.
Texas-Dallas senior Michael Darrow was voted the 2013 Preseason Offensive Player of the Year while Texas-Tyler’s Enoch Shipman was chosen as the 2013 Preseason Defensive Player of the Year.
The Cru finished 10-6-1 overall and 8-3-1 in conference play last season. UMHB fell in the opening round of the 2012 ASC Championship Tournament. Head Coach Brad Bankhead welcomes back 17 letter winners and eight starters from last year’s team this season. The UMHB men will open the 2013 with a 6 p.m. match against Schreiner at the Cru SportsPlex in Belton on Aug. 30th.
