UMHB Players Sweep ASC Honors

Belton (October 21, 2012) – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor football program swept American Southwest Conference Player of the Week honors after topping Hardin-Simmons 45-32 in a battle of the only two teams unbeaten in ASC play on Saturday. LiDarral Bailey, Javicz Jones and Chad Peevey were recognized for their performances in that victory.

Bailey, a senior quarterback from Bremond High School, was named Co-Offensive Player of the Week. He ran for 172 yards and two touchdowns on 23 carries. He also went 13-21 through the air for 250 yards and another score and led UMHB on three scoring drives to erase a 32-31 fourth-quarter deficit. This is the third Offensive Player of the Week honor for Bailey this season and he shares this week’s award with ETBU quarterback Seth Hubbard.

Jones, a senior linebacker from Morton Ranch High School in Katy, claimed Defensive Player of the Week honors. He posted 14 total tackles, 2.0 tackles for loss and broke up a pass in addition to producing three turnovers. Jones forced a fumble on a sack and then recovered that fumble. He also intercepted passes on the two HSU drives after the Cru took a 39-32 lead in the fourth quarter. Those interceptions killed the Cowboys comeback hopes and set up a pair of insurance field goals for UMHB. Jones was named ASC Special Teams Player of the Week last week.

Peevey, a junior kicker/punter from St. Joseph’s High School in Bryan, hit three clutch second half field goals and added four extra points to score 13 total points. He also averaged 40.6 yards per punt and added four touchbacks on kickoffs for the Cru. This is his second Player of the Week honor this season.

UMHB is now 7-0 overall and 4-0 in ASC play on the season and the Cru is ranked #2 in the country in both national polls. UMHB returns to action with a 2:00 PM kickoff at Howard Payne University next Saturday in Brownwood.
