UMHB Softball Drops Doubleheader To Howard Payne

BELTON (March 15, 2013) -- The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader to Howard Payne University Friday night in Belton. The Cru fell to the Yellow Jackets 2-1 in the first game and 3-0 in the second. UMHB falls to 8-8 on the season and 3-3 in American Southwest Conference play while Howard Payne improves to 9-8 overall and 4-0 in conference action.

Howard Payne jumped to a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth when Tylene Middleton scored after getting on base with a double. Katie Poerner hit a homerun to center field in the top of the fifth to increase the Yellow Jackets’ lead to 2-0. The Cru responded in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI single from Leanne Hinojosa, but was not able to catch the Yellow Jackets in the game. Rebekah Ragsdale took the loss for UMHB, pitching a complete seven innings allowing five hits and two runs. Ragsdale struck out six batters and recorded no walks. UMHB had six hits in the game and recorded two errors while Howard Payne had five hits and no errors.

Tylene Middleton gave the Yellow Jackets an early 1-0 lead in the second game with a homerun to right-centerfield in the top of the first. Poerner added to the Yellow Jackets’ lead with a homer in similar fashion in the top of the third. Howard Payne added another run in the top of the ninth on an RBI single from Shandi Winstead to secure the 3-0 win. Alyssa Fincher took the loss for the Cru, allowing two runs on four hits. Fincher struck out five batters and recorded one walk. UMHB had four hits and one error in the game, while the Yellow Jackets recorded six hits and two errors.

Dayton Kunz led the Cru with three hits while Hinojosa and Tori Gomez added two each. The Cru returns to action tomorrow at noon with a doubleheader against Howard Payne at Dee Dillon Field in Belton.
