BELTON (February 16, 2013) -- The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team could not generate enough offense to overcome Texas-Tyler’s multiple-run innings as the Cru dropped both ends of its season-opening doubleheader to the Patriots Saturday afternoon in Belton. The wins open the Patriots with a 2-0 record while UMHB begins its season at 0-2.
The Cru fell to an early 1-0 deficit in the first innings and could not overcome a three-run third inning in a 5-1 loss. The Patriots put the game away with a 4-0 lead before the Cru responded with a run in the bottom of the third. Texas-Tyler put one more on the board at the top of the fourth and held that for the remainder of the game. Caitlin Bollier led UMHB with two hits while Leanne Hinojosa, Chandler Henson and Ariel Kemmerer also got on base. Rebekah Ragsdale took the loss for the Cru. UMHB was outhit 7-5 in the loss and committed two errors.
The Patriots jumped to an early 8-0 lead in the first inning of the second game and maintained that lead for duration to secure the sweep. Kelsey Vann got the lone hit in the game for the Cru while the Patriots recorded nine. Halle Sabo took the loss for the Cru.
UMHB will return to action Feb. 22-23 at the Louisiana College Tournament in Pineville, La. The Cru will return home March 15 to host Howard Payne in a doubleheader beginning at 5 p.m. at Dee Dillon Field.
