FARMERS BRANCH (March 1, 2013) -- The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team split the opening day of the American Southwest Conference First Pitch Tournament with a 10-4 win over Mississippi College and a 7-4 loss to LeTourneau. The Cru improves to 4-4 while LeTourneau moves to 10-2 and Mississippi College to 1-4. With the win over Mississippi College, UMHB earned one of the two West Division wins on the day.
UMHB used a big third inning to gain a 4-0 advantage on Mississippi College in the first game of the day. Kelsey Vann’s triple started the inning, with Gomez hitting an RBI single and Kourtney Bevers adding two RBI with a double and a run in her first game with the Cru. Mississippi College responded with three runs in the fourth and one in the fifth to tie the game at 4-4. The Cru added three turns in the top of the sixth and seventh innings to earn a 10-4 win over the Choctaws. UMHB recorded 10 runs on 15 hits and 1 error in the game, while Mississippi scored four runs off of seven hits and recorded one error.
LeTourneau used an early 6-0 lead to put distance on the Cru. UMHB scored four runs in the top of the fourth off a homer from Victoria Gomez and RBI singles from Bevers and Janie Neyland. LeTourneau added another run in the bottom of the fourth to gain a 7-3 lead. UMHB scored again in the top of the seventh but was unable to catch LeTourneau, falling 7-4. The Cru scored four runs on seven hits and recorded three errors while LeTourneau scored seven runs and recorded nine hits and two errors.
Vann led UMHB with five hits, while Leanne Hinojosa added four. Vann was also the top scorer for the Cru as she and Chennault put three runs on the board each. Rebekah Ragsdale earned over the win over Mississippi College for the Cru, pitching a complete game with four strikeouts. Taylor Grissom took the loss against LeTourneau, allowing three hits and four runs.
The Cru will return tomorrow for the second day of the ASC First Pitch Tournament with a 12:30 p.m. match against East Texas Baptist and a 5:30 p.m. game against University of the Ozarks.
