ABILENE (April 6, 2013) -- The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team swept Hardin-Simmons in the second day of play in Abilene, with 14-5 and 6-3 wins over the Cowgirls. The Cru improves to 18-14 on the season and 13-7 in American Southwest Conference action, while the Cowgirls fall to 10-19-1 overall and 8-8 in conference play.
UMHB started strong offensively in the first game, scoring 10 runs in the first two innings of play. The Cowgirls responded with a home run in the bottom of the second before the Cru responded with two more runs in the top of the third for a 12-1 lead after three complete innings. UMHB added two more runs in the top of the fourth before Hardin-Simmons mounted a comeback, scoring four runs in the bottom of the fourth to cut UMHB’s lead to nine. Caitlin Bollier led the Cru with four hits while Kelsey Vann and Tori Gomez each added three. Heather Smith led the Cru with three RBI. UMHB totaled 19 runs and two errors while the Cowgirls had nine and no errors. Rebekah Ragsdale went three innings in the circle for UMHB, allowing four hits and one run.
The Cowgirls responded in the second game, gaining an early 2-1 lead on UMHB after one inning. The Cru responded with two runs in the top of the second and held that lead until the bottom of the sixth when Shelby McIntyre scored the tying run for Hardin-Simmons. The Cru came out strong in the top of the seventh, scoring three runs including an RBI double from Bollier. Kelsey Vann led the Cru with three hits, while Bollier, Smith, Kourtney Bevers and Leanne Hinojosa each added two. UMHB recorded 13 hits and one error while Hardin-Simmons bat for eight hits and recorded one error. Halle Sabo earned the win for the Cru, allowing one run and two hits with one strikeout.
The Cru will return to action April 9th with a doubleheader at Trinity University beginning at 5 p.m.
