Belton (February 8, 2013) -- The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor men’s and women’s tennis teams opened the spring schedule with a solid performance on the opening day of the Crusader Challenge Tournament Friday in Belton. The two-day, four-team, flighted tournament features men’s and women’s teams from UMHB, Howard Payne University, Southwestern University and Austin College.
In flight one women’s singles, UMHB’s Brittni Fausett opened with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Sophie McDonald of Austin College. The Cru’s Chaley Shiffler posted a 6-1, 6-1 opening round win over Howard Payne’s Whitney Turnacliff.
In flight two women’s singles, Ashlee Bilbo topped Elizabeth Ellis of Southwestern University 6-1, 6-3. UMHB’s Hannah Warren posted a 6-3, 6-0 win over Meghan White of Austin College.
In flight three women’s singles, Angelie Juaneza was a 6-1, 6-2 winner over HPU’s Cathryn Rasbury in the opening round. Tawnie Yeaw beat Austin College’s Ashley Hellman 6-2, 6-3.
In flight four women’s singles, UMHB’s Paola Nunez beat Southwestern’s Chelsea Sommerfeldt 6-3, 6-2 before falling to Southwestern’s Sarah Johnson 6-3, 4-6, 11-9. Elizabeth Ostroff topped Johnson 6-3, 6-3 and then beat Southwestern’s Sharon Saltoon 6-2, 6-4. Penelope Kittel topped Sommerfeldt 6-2, 6-0 after having a first round bye.
In flight one women’s doubles, Fausett and Warren will play for the championship on Saturday. The pair teamed for an 8-1 win over Aimee Blake and Elizabeth Ellis of Southwestern and then beat Lizzie Flint and Sophie McDonald of Austin College 8-2. Bilbo and Shiffler lost to Southwestern’s Virginia Stofer and Gabby Hunt 8-5 in the first round before turning around to beat HPU’s Turnacliff and Samantha Guerrero 8-4.
In flight two women’s doubles, Juaneza and Kittel opened with an 8-3 win over AC’s Amy Harvey and Ashley Hellman and then beat Kristina Krampitz and Sommerfeldt of Southwestern 8-6. Ostroff and Yeaw opened with an 8-6 victory over Krampitz and Sommerfeldt before beating Rasbury and Andrea Leonard of HPU 8-2.
For UMHB in flight one men’s singles, Will Summers was a 6-2, 6-1 winner over Southwestern’s Egan Cornachione. Jake Stamps outlasted Southwestern’s Andy Clarage 6-1, 7-6(0).
In flight two men’s singles, the Cru’s Collin Davies was a 6-3, 6-2 winner over James Taylor of Austin College. UMHB’s John Martin fell to Southwestern’s Sam McCready 4-6, 6-3, 10-3.
In flight three men’s singles, Jimmy Turner opened with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Southwestern’s Dax Collison. Tevin Ogo fought off Southwestern’s Jonathan Sandoval 7-5, 4-6, 10-3.
In flight four men’s singles, T.J. Kittrell beat Alvaro Rojas of Southwestern 6-2, 6-2.
In flight one men’s doubles, Summers and Kittrell teamed up to move into the finals. The duo opened with an 8-6 victory over Jack Kunde and Taylor of Austin College before beating McCready and Cornichione of Southwestern by the same score in the semifinals. Davies and Martin lost in the first round to Luis Vallecillo and Jeremy Rodriguez of Howard Payne 8-6 but turned around and beat Tyler Roush and David Smith of Austin College 8-6 to move into the fifth place match.
In flight two men’s doubles, Stamps and Turner opened with an 8-0 win over Rojas and Edward Yu of Southwestern before beating Angeledes and Alleyn of Austin College to move into the championship match.
The tournament wraps up on Saturday with a final round of doubles and two rounds of singles play. The event is being played at the Yvonne Li Tennis Center and UMHB Recreational Tennis Courts on the UMHB campus.
