Belton, TX (October 20, 2012) – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor volleyball team closed out the home schedule and American Southwest Conference play in style, sweeping past Mississippi College 3-0 Saturday afternoon in Belton. UMHB posted a 25-21, 25-13, 25-17 victory to improve to 19-5 overall and 12-4 in ASC play on the season. The loss drops the Choctaws to 11-18 overall and 4-11 in the ASC on the year.
UMHB trailed 4-0 in the first set before battling back to tie it at 12. The Cru would trail again at 19-15 before winning 10 of the last 12 points to win the set. UMHB roared out to an 11-3 lead in the second set and never let the Choctaws get closer than eight points the rest of that set. The Cru controlled the third set, leading 8-1 and 15-8 before holding off a late MC rally for the win.
Sapphire Reid led UMHB with 11 kills and Cheyenne Dowdey added 10 more. Shelby Prather had 34 assists and 13 digs and Reid and Elise Butler also reached double figures with 10 digs apiece.
Three different players have five kills apiece to lead the Choctaws. Lauryn Hamrick had 20 assists and Holly Tupper recorded 11 digs.
The Cru will now close out the regular season with two matches at the Southwestern University Tournament next Saturday. UMHB will then advance to the ASC Championship Tournament the following weekend in Abilene. The Cru will be the #3 seed from the East Division in that tournament.
