UMHB Women's Golf Leads Alamo City Classic, Men Fifth

Spring Branch (October 22, 2012) -- The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women’s golf team posted the lowest team score in program history as the Cru built a 35-stroke lead after the opening round of the Alamo City Classic Monday in Spring Branch. The UMHB women fired a blistering 303 team total and lead second place U.T.-Tyler’s 338 by 35 shots. Tournament host Trinity University is third with a 339, Concordia Texas posted a 341 for fourth place, Schreiner University holds down fifth place with a 345, Texas Lutheran University is sixth at 350 and Hardin-Simmons University rounds out the field with a 359. The two-day, 36-hole event is being played on a par-72, 5,814-yard layout at River Crossing Golf Course in Spring Branch.

UMHB also holds down the top three individual spots. Taylor O’Rear has the individual lead after shooting a record-breaking, two-under-par 70. It is the lowest individual round in the history of the program and also represents the lowest round in relation to par in the history of UMHB women’s golf. Elizabeth Davis is in second place with a 76 and Victoria Thane holds third place with a 76. Kelly Gonyea shot 82 to tie for ninth place, Sara Eckert is tied for 12th after posting an 83, Emily Santos carded an 84 for 15th place, Ashley Garbade is tied for 16th with an 85 and Allison Holly is 38th after shooting 97 on Monday.

The previous low team round in the history of the program was a 304 at the HSU Classic in 2003-04. The previous low individual round in school history was a 71 posted by Karen Hudson (2003-04) and Allison Williams (2010-11). Hudson’s one-under 71 was the low round in relation to par prior to O’Rear’s record-setting round on Monday. The Cru will tee off in tomorrow’s final round with an 8:30 AM shotgun start.

The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor men’s golf team stayed within striking distance on the opening day of the Alamo City Classic Monday, but the Cru will have some ground to make up after sitting in fifth place. The UMHB men posted a 307 team score and trail first-round leader U.T.-Tyler’s 295 by 12 strokes. Tournament host Trinity University is second with a 303, Schreiner University holds down third with a 304 and Southwestern University is fourth, two shots ahead of the Cru with a 305. Texas Luthwran University is sixth with a 308, Hardin-Simmons fired a 313 for seventh and Concordia Texas rounds out the field with a 320. The two-day, 36-hole event is being played on a par-72, 6,838-yard layout at River Crossing Golf Course in Spring Branch.

Matt Day and Justin Judkins fired the low individual rounds for the Cru as both players posted 76’s to tie for 15th place. Robby Schimmels is tied for 20th with a 77 and Stayton Lindeman and Pablo Mena Medrano both carded 78’s to tie for 23rd place. U.T.-Tyler’s Charley Graves holds the individual lead after shooting a three-under 69 on Monday.

The Cru will tee off in tomorrow’s final round with an 8:30 AM shotgun start. This tournament also closes out the fall tournament schedule for the UMHB men’s golf team.
