TYLER (September 20, 2013) -- The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women’s tennis team opened play at the ITA Southwest Regional Tournament with a strong showing in singles play. The Cru also split matches in doubles competition.
In flight “A” singles, Chaley Shiffler opened with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Hannah Word of East Texas Baptist University. AshLee Bilbo posted a 6-4, 6-2 win over Howard Payne’s Brittany Walker. Angelie Juaneza topped Kacie Berutti of Hardin-Simmons 6-4, 6-2. Hannah Warren moves to the consolation round after falling to U.T.-Tyler’s Nicole Musngi 6-2, 6-2.
In flight “A” doubles, Bilbo and Juaneza teamed for an 8-5 victory over Sarah Case and Kristi Miley of LeTourneau University. Shiffler and Lizzie Ostroff fell to seventh-seeded Kathleen Lundquist and Caroline White of Trinity University.
Flight “B” singles will open on Saturday with four of the five UMHB players having first round byes. Flight “B” doubles will also open play on Saturday.
The tournament runs through Sunday and is being played at several sites in Tyler. Much of Friday’s play was moved indoors due to rain and a power outage.
