Belton, TX (October 19, 2012) – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor volleyball team overcame a third-set lull to control the fourth set and the Cru rolled to a 3-1 victory over East Texas Baptist University Friday night in Belton. UMHB won 25-16, 25-23, 18-25, 25-16 to improve to 18-5 overall and 11-4 in American Southwest Conference play. The loss drops the Tigers to 15-7 overall and 12-3 in the ASC on the year.
UMHB roared out to a 9-1 lead in set one and never let the Tigers get closer than seven points in that stanza. The Cru fell behind 6-2 early in the second set, fought back to tie the match at ten and eventually built a 22-20 lead. The two teams traded points from there before a Sapphire Reid kill closed it out to put UMHB up 2-0. The Tigers overcame UMHB’s early 7-3 lead in the third set and took advantage of nine Cru attack errors to cut the lead to 2-1. ETBU would take another lead in the fourth set, going up 8-6, but UMHB took over from there, building leads of 15-9 and 18-10 and then coasting to the victory.
The Cru hit .261 as a team while posting 11 service aces and 11 team blocks. ETBU hit .189 as a team and only recorded two service aces and four team blocks in the match.
Lauren Powell led UMHB with 17 kills and Reid added 15 more. Shelby Prather had 34 assists, 13 digs and four service aces. Kendall Pye added 19 assists for UMHB and Reid had six block assists.
Kolby Sharp topped ETBU with 11 kills and Kassie Freitag had nine. Kayla Taylor posted 25 assists and Tara Wait added 13. Hannah Jones had a team-best 15 digs.
The Cru will close out ASC East Division play and the home portion of the schedule with a 5:00 PM match against Mississippi College on Saturday. UMHB will then close out the regular season with two matches at the Southwestern Tournament next Saturday. The Cru has already clinched a berth in the ASC Championship Tournament and will be the #3 seed from the East Division when that tournament opens in Abilene on November 1st.
