Alpine (April 6, 2012) -- The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team used different methods, but the results were the same as the Cru swept a doubleheader from Sul Ross State Friday afternoon in Alpine. UMHB won game one 10-9 and took game two 4-2 to improve to 15-16 overall and 6-9 in American Southwest Conference West Division play with the wins. The two losses drop the Lobos to 7-26 overall and 3-12 in the ASC West on the season.
The Cru built a huge early lead and then held off a furious Sul Ross comeback in a 10-9 victory in game one. Chris Florack drove in three runs and Seth Lynn added an RBI groundout to give UMHB a 4-0 lead in the top of the first. The Cru pushed it to 9-0 with a five-run third inning. Lynn singled home the first run, Seth Mogavero scored on a wild pitch, Tim Yan singled home two more and Zach Young’s RBI single closed out the scoring in that frame. Sul Ross scored two in the bottom of the third and added four more in the fourth to close the gap to 9-6. Braden Embry scored on a balk in the top of the sixth to make it 10-6. The Lobos used Emmett Crisp’s three-run homer to close to within 10-9 in the bottom of the sixth. Both teams would put two runners on in the seventh, but neither could push across a run as the Cru held on for the win. Chase Daniels picked up the win for UMHB to move to 3-2. Kreece Cooper earned his first save of the year for the Cru. Florack had two hits and drove in three runs to lead the UMHB offense.
The Cru built another early lead, but this time used an outstanding pitching performance to make it stand up in a 4-2 win in game two. A run-scoring throwing error and Lynn’s RBI groundout made it 2-0 UMHB in the top of the fourth. Embry’s RBI fielder’s choice gave the Cru a 3-0 lead in the fifth. Sul Ross cut it to 3-1 in the sixth before Young drove in Tyler Wicks in the seventh to give UMHB a 4-1 edge. The Lobos added a run in the bottom of the ninth, but that’s as close as they could get. Cameron Arnett scattered 12 hits and allowed just one earned run in a complete-game performance to improve to 4-2. Florack and Mogavero combined for four of the Cru’s five hits in the win.
UMHB will return to action with a three-game road series at Schreiner University next weekend in Kerrville. The two teams will open the series with a 2:00 PM single game on Friday before closing out the weekend with a 12:00 PM doubleheader next Saturday.
