UMHB Men & Women Golf In Top 5 At UMHB Spring Invitational

Temple (February 27, 2012) -- The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor men’s golf team posted six of the top ten individual rounds on the tournaments opening day and the Cru holds down the top two team spots after the first day of the UMHB Spring Invitational. The Cru purple team fired a 305 team total and leads the tournament by two strokes over the UMHB gold team after the gold team posted a 307 team total. Southwestern University is in third place with a 320 team total, Augustana College is in fourth place with a 342 and the Augustana JV rounds out the field with a 370 total.

A trio of UMHB golfers is tied for the individual lead after shooting 74’s on Monday. Bryce Myburgh, Pablo Mena Medrano and Caleb Asp all posted that total for the Cru to share the lead. Stayton Lindeman and Justin Judkins both shot 76’s for UMHB to tie for fifth place and Evan Kaye holds down seventh place with a 77. Spencer Turner shot 80 for the Cru to tie for 12th place, Michael Haney and Mike McQuaid both shot 81’s to tie for 14th place and Robby Schimmels is tied for 17th place with an 83.

The tournament is being played on a par-72, 7,010-yard layout at Wildflower Country Club in Temple. Teams will wrap up the tournament with tomorrow’s final round, using a shotgun start at 8:30 AM.

The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women’s golf team struggled in its first round of the spring tournament season and the Cru is in fourth place after the opening day of the Lady Cru Spring Invitational. The UMHB women posted a 333 team total and trail first-round leader Western Texas Community College’s 306 team total by 27 strokes. Oklahoma Christian University in in second place with a 307 and Wayland Baptist University posted a 311 total for third place, 22 shots ahead of UMHB. Oklahoma Baptist fired a 337 for fifth place, Southwestern University’s 345 is good for sixth place, U.C.-Santa Cruz is in seventh place at 365, Berry College carded a 377 for eighth place, Hardin-Simmons is in ninth place after shooting 392 and St. Thomas recorded a 446 for tenth place.

Taylor O’Rear fired the low individual round for the UMHB women, posting a 79 to tie for tenth place individually. Sara Eckert is tied for 18th place with an 83 for the Cru, Kelly Gonyea and Kristen Cain both carded 85’s to tie for 24th place, Victoria Thane recorded an 86 for 27th place, Allison Holly is tied for 28th place with an 87 and Emily Santos is tied for 41st place with a 94. Morgan Dockery of Oklahoma Christian has the individual lead after shooting a 73 on Monday.
