UMHB Remains In 5th At NCAA National Championship

Angola, Ind. (May 10, 2012) -- The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women’s golf team shot another consistent round of 317 on Thursday and the Cru held on to fifth place after the third round of the NCAA Division III National Championships.

The tournament is being played at the Zollner Golf Course on the campus of Trine University in Angola, Indiana. The Cru women were led by a pair of 78’s from freshmen Taylor O’Rear and Victoria Thane. Kelly Gonyea birdied her last hole to card an 80, and Sara Eckert and Kristen Cain both shot 81.

In the team race, fourteen-time defending national champion Methodist University carded a 312 on Thursday to remain in first place with a three round total of 932, two shots ahead of DePauw who shot a team total of 313 in the third round for a three day total of 934. Williams College shot the low round of the day at 309 to move into third place with a three day total of 939. Wisconsin-Eau Claire sits in fourth place, shooting a team total of 320 today and a three day total of 942. UMHB remains in fifth place at 949. Sixth place is held by Centre College at 950, just one stroke behind the Cru.

Catherine Wagner of Wisconsin-Eau Claire still leads the individual race after posting a 76 today for a three round total of 225. Wagner holds a narrow one shot lead over Emily Bachert of Centre College, who shot 74 today, 226 total. Molly Erickson of St. Olaf College and Doyle O’Brien of St. Mary’s College-IN are tied for third at 227. Fifth place is held by Taylor Beaty of DePauw University at 228. Georgiana Salant of Williams College holds sixth place along at 229. In a tie for seventh are Sarah Paulson of Centre College and Jennifer Sullivan of Methodist University 230. Mary Snode of Mount Union, Victoria Student of Williams College, and Flora Weeks of Middlebury are tied for ninth at 231. For the Cru women, Victoria Thane is tied for 17th place with a 79-77-78=234, Kelly Gonyea shares 30th place with an 80-77-80=237, Kristen Cain (78-80-81) and Taylor O’Rear (80-81-78) are tied for 34th place with 239’s and Sara Eckertis tied for 68th with an 83-61-85=249.

Coach Darla Kirby reflects on Thursday’s round: “Again, we had some struggles early, but finished strong. We hung in there and played the last 3 holes 2 under as a team. We hope to carry over that momentum to tomorrow. Our goal is to climb the leader board and finish in the top four. It’s been so much fun watching these girls compete.”

The Lady Cru will begin Friday’s final round on the #1 tee with tee times beginning at 12:30. UMHB will be paired with Centre College and Wisconsin-Eau Claire.

The four-day, 72-hole event is being played on the par 72, 5,990-yard layout at Zollner Golf Course. This is UMHB women’s second straight appearance in the NCAA DIII Championship and their eighth overall NCAA postseason appearance. The Cru has finished seventh and 14th in the country in its last two NCAA appearances after posting four straight national runner-up finishes.
