FARMERS BRANCH (April 26, 2012) -- The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball saw an early lead slip away and the Cru’s late comeback bid fell short in a 13-8 loss to Louisiana College Thursday night in Farmers Branch. The loss came in the final game of the opening day of the American Southwest Conference Championship Tournament and drops UMHB to 24-16 on the season. The Wildcats improve to 27-11 overall on the year with the win.
The Cru took a 1-0 lead when Kaysie Creech’s sacrifice fly brought home Ashton Feight in the bottom of the second inning. Hannah White’s two-run triple stretched the UMHB lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the third, but LC answered with a five-run fourth to take the lead. Meggie Burkett and Laura Gulotta-Parrish both had two-run singles in that frame for the Wildcats. Burkett added another two-run single in the top of the fifth to push the lead to 7-3. Janie Neyland had a two-run single of her own in the bottom of the sixth to cut the gap to 7-5 before White tied the game at seven with a two-out, two-run double in the bottom of the sixth. The Wildcats retook the lead when Daniele Wilson singled home the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh and LC added an insurance run on a throwing error on the same play. An Emily Douglas RBI double would push the lead to 10-7 and Meagan Pearson hit a three-run home to make it 13-7 Wildcats. UMHB would pull to within 13-8 on Caitlin Wells’ RBI single in the bottom of the seventh, but that’s as close as they would get.
White took the loss for the Cru to fall to 3-5 on the season. White led the Cru offense with two hits and four runs batted in and Neyland and Wells added two hits apiece for the Cru. Jordan Waldroup earned the win for LC to move to 7-4 on the year. Burkett was 5-5 for the Wildcats and Douglas added four more as LC out-hit the Cru 22-10 in the game.
The Cru will now face Hardin-Simmons University in an elimination game at 1:30 PM tomorrow. HSU fell to East Texas Baptist 3-0 in a first-round game on Thursday.
