UT-Permian Basin Wants To Play Football

ODESSA (July 31, 2013)--Officials at the University of Texas-Permian Basin in Odessa are backing a proposal in support of starting an NCAA Division II football program.

UTPB President David Watts told the Odessa American that results of a feasibility study now underway will be sent to UT System regents.

UTPB hopes for an answer by year's end and supporters would like to see a team on the field in 2015 as part of the Lone Star Conference.

Ector County school officials on Tuesday night approved allowing the university to play at Ratliff Stadium, which is used by Odessa and Permian high schools and was featured in the film "Friday Night Lights," a 2004 movie about the passion for high school football in West Texas.

UTPB is part of the Heartland Conference, which doesn't include football.
