GEORGETOWN (April 20, 2013) -- It doesn't get any more perfect than this.
Eli Sanchez scored with seven minutes to play and the University boys' soccer team beat El Paso Del Valle 1-0 for the 4A state championship Saturday, capping a 33-0 season in its first-ever trip to the state tournament.
With the win, University becomes just the second-ever undefeated state champion and ties the state record with its 33rd win of the season.
University was against the wind in the first half, leading to limited scoring opportunities. But the Trojans defense withstood a couple of good looks from the Conquistadores to head into halftime 0-0.
University went on the attack early and often in the second half. Their best scoring opportunity came in the 49th minute when Michael Solis had a couple of shots on goal after a free kick from just outside the box. Neither shot, however, found the back of the net, and both teams continued their stalemate.
In the 73rd minute, Jon Lozano got a step on his defender on the right side and fired toward the goal. The Del Valle goalie knocked it down, but Sanchez was there to punch home the rebound for the only goal of the game.
