Yoe's Success Brings Back Memories for Coach

Success is nothing new for Cameron Yoe head coach Rick Rhoades.
As the head coach at New Braunfels in 2002, Rhoades led his team to state championship. But while Rick was battling for a state title, his wife was battling for her life.
"It all started after that first playoff game," said Rick's wife, Sheri.
"She had gone upstairs and she came down and said, 'I kinda feel a twinge, I think I feel something,'" Rick said
What Sheri felt was a lump in her breast.
"When my wife woke up from the biopsy, I went into the room that she was in and I didn't even have to say anything. She knew from the look in my eyes that it had come back cancerous and we just broke down and cried," Rick added.
At the time Sheri was diagnosed, Rick was just three wins away from reaching his first-ever state championship…
"He immediately said I'll quit coaching, I'll get out of coaching, do whatever I need to do," Sheri said.
"She'd say, 'let's stay focused on what we can control and what you can control is this team,'" said Rick.
While his wife continued to battle cancer, Rick continued to coach and led New Braunfels to its first state title game since 1948.
"It was perfect timing to have football be my distraction," said Sheri.
Rick and Sheri say they see a lot of similarities between this year's Cameron Yoe team and Rick's 2002 New Braunfels team. Sheri says she wants to make another run this year. Only this time, she wants to win it and she'll be doing it cancer free.
"I was officially done with my treatments July of the following year, July of 2003," Sheri said. "I want to make the run where we win without the distraction of cancer."
And even though it was 10 years ago, that shock has never left them and as breast cancer awareness month comes to an end, they're determined to continue fighting the disease.
"We raised over $5,000 this year," Rick said. "It helps people that were in the same situation we were in."
