LONG BEACH, Calif. (August 26, 2012) -- After starting the season 3-0, the 24th-ranked Baylor women’s soccer team suffered its first loss of the year on Sunday with a 2-1 overtime setback against 15th-ranked Long Beach State at George Allen Field.
“We showed unbelievable character and resolve today,” head coach Marci Jobson said. “I am proud of my team in every way. If we continue to play with that heart, we will have a great season.”
The two teams played a scoreless first half that featured a total of six shots with Baylor controlling possession for much of the period.
Baylor (3-1) got the scoring started in the 59th minute as Dana Larsen collected her second goal in as many games. The senior forward tallied her second goal of the year and 20th of her career on a header off of set piece. Taylor Heatherly was credited with her second assist of the year, after putting the 40-yard free kick up for Larsen to redirect into net.
“Dana had an awesome header, after making a great run,” Jobson said.
Long Beach State (3-0) would even the contest only five minutes later in the 64th minute with a goal from defender Alex Balcer on a free kick from 55 yards out.
Baylor had a chance for another goal came in the 71st when Kat Ludlow hit the crossbar off of a corner kick offering from Justine Hovden.
The score would remain tied through the end of regulation to send Baylor to its first overtime game since November 2, 2011 against Missouri in the Big 12 Championship.
Only 1:46 into overtime, Long Beach State got the golden goal from Eileen Maes to secure the 2-1 victory. Maes headed in a free kick from Jordan Nelson.
For the game, Long Beach State outshot BU, 11-10, but the Bears led 6-5 in shots on goal. Karlee Summey and Natalie Huggins led the way for Baylor with three shots each. Michelle Kloss played her third complete game of the season in goal, while recording three saves.
The Bears will now return home for two games starting on Friday when BU hosts Nebraska at 7 p.m., while McNeese State will come to Waco on Sunday at 1 p.m.
