EL PASO (April 20, 2014) Southwest University Park, the $72 million stadium El Paso is building, will be ready in time for the home opener of the city’s minor league baseball team, the Chihuahuas.

The Triple-A Padres affiliate hosts Fresno on April 28 in the new ballpark.

A temporary certificate of occupancy has been issued the stadium, but an official certificate won't be issued until two 3-story buildings beyond right field are completed, furniture is installed and the kitchen is ready.

Alan Shubert, project manager for the new stadium, said everything will be ready.

"We are sliding into home plate,” he said.

Work started on the downtown ballpark started last spring.

The City of El Paso owns the stadium.
