(August 14, 2012) -- The Boston Red Sox have traded backup catcher Kelly Shoppach to the New York Mets for a player to be named later.
Shoppach, 32, signed a one-year, $1.35 million contract last December and was having a productive season as Jarrod Saltalamacchia’s backup. In 48 games, the former Baylor Bear batted .250 with 12 doubles, two triples, five home runs, 17 RBI, 16 runs scored, 11 walks and one stolen base.
The Red Sox placed Shoppach on waivers last week. According to the Mets, a deal was worked out after they placed a claim on Shoppach, who figures to back up starting catcher Josh Thole. The Mets were interested in Shoppach last winter.
