SANDESTIN, Fla. (October 13, 2013) -- The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor men’s golf team fired another sub-300 round and the Cru men are tied for sixth place after the opening round of the Golfweek Division III Fall Preview Sunday in Florida. The UMHB men posted a 294 team total and are tied with Methodist University for sixth place. Oglethorpe University has the team lead after firing a blistering 284 on Sunday. LaGrange is in second place with a 286, Rhodes College is third at 287 and Centre College and St. John Fisher are tied for fourth place with 292’s, two strokes ahead of the Cru. There is an 18-team field competing in the invitation-only event at the site of the NCAA Division III National Championships. The three-day, 54-hole event is being played on a par-71, 6,505-yard layout at Raven Golf Club in Sandestin, Florida.
Pablo Mena Medrano fired the low opening round for the UMHB men, posting a 71 to tie for 10th-place individually. Stayton Lindeman shot 72 and is tied for 16th place, Robby Schimmels carded a 74 to tie for 37th, Jarrod Brown recorded a 77 to tie for 63rd and Justin Judkins is tied for 67th after shooting 78. Oglethorpe’s Anthony Maccaglia and Ryan Henry of Millsaps are tied for the individual lead after posting 69’s on the opening day.
The tournament runs through Tuesday. The UMHB men will begin teeing off in Monday’s Second Round at 8:45 AM.
The UMHB women’s golf team finds itself in fourth place after the opening round of the Golfweek Division III Fall Preview Sunday in Florida. The UMHB women posted a 317 team total and trail first-round leader Methodist University’s total of 296 by 21 strokes. Trinity University is in second place with a 309 score and Washington-St. Louis is third, three shots ahead of UMHB with a 314. Rhodes College is fifth with a 319 and U.T.-Tyler carded a 320 for sixth place. There is a 17-team field competing in the invitation-only event at the site of the NCAA Division III National Championships. The three-day, 54-hole event is being played on a par-72, 5,802-yard layout at Baytowne Golf Club in Sandestin, Florida.
Elizabeth Davis fired the low individual round for the Cru women on Sunday. Davis shot 77 and is tied for 11th place. Ashley Garbade posted a 78 for UMHB and is tied for 19th, Victoria Thane is tied for 24th after firing a 79, Kelly Gonyea recorded an 83 to tie for 46th place and Taylor O’Rear is tied for 54th place with an opening round 84. Methodist teammates Loretta Giovannettone and Nucharin Kantapasara are tied with Illinois Wesleyan’s Katie Klosterman for the individual lead after those three players carded first round 72’s.
