Baylor Soccer Shuts Out McNeese St.

WACO (September 2, 2012) -- For the fourth time this season, the Baylor women’s soccer team held its opponent without a goal in a 5-0 victory over McNeese State on Sunday at Betty Lou Mays Soccer Field.

“Sometimes when you have a great Friday game, you can lose your focus on Sunday, but we did a good job coming out and being us and putting them away,” head coach Marci Jobson said. “This was also a great opportunity to rest some girls that will play high minutes later in the season.”

On a day when Baylor’s six seniors were recognized following the game, the Bears (5-1) started fast and controlled possession throughout the contest. For the game, Baylor outshot McNeese State, 34-1 and had 14 shots on goal to none for the Cowgirls.

Baylor opened the scoring in the 12th minute as Karlee Summey found herself in possession of the ball, after Dana Larsen corralled a free ball and passed it to Summey following a flurry of activity in front of the net. It was Summey’s second score of the season and Larsen’s first season.

Less than 20 minutes later, Kat Ludlow posted her third goal of the year by heading in a ball to the far post to increase the lead to 2-0. Natalie Huggins gave BU a 3-0 lead at the halftime break as she spun and flicked in a pass from Jordan Hatler in the 44th minute.

“This was a good weekend for us on goal scoring and to give the girls some confidence,” Jobson said. “I think Lisa (Sliwinski), Natalie and Dana all gained confidence, which will help us in the coming games.”

In the second half, Baylor held the Cowgirls without a shot and added two goals. Michelle Hagen headed in a rebound off a Caitlin Fennegan shot that hit off the crossbar in the 70th minute for her second score of the season.

The final goal of the match came in the 76th minute as sophomore Anja Rosales got her first goal of the season.

It marks the sixth time in program history that the Bears have started a season 5-1 or better.

The Bears have never lost to the Cowgirls, holding a 5-0 record against them in the all-time series. Baylor is now 23-3-3 at home over the last two-plus seasons with Jobson boasting a 32-10-6 mark in Waco during her tenure.

The Bears will go on the road for their next two games with matches at North Texas on Friday at 7 p.m. and a contest against at UTSA at 7 p.m.
