PALOS VERDES, Calif. (February 13, 2013) -- The Baylor women’s golf team finished in sixth place after shooting 15-over-par 299 in Wednesday’s final round of the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge at Palos Verdes Golf Club.
“We are off to a great start, to win our first event and then go play well in a strong field, I couldn’t be happier with our start to the spring,” head coach Jay Goble said.
Baylor (+46; 302-297-299=898) finished six strokes behind fifth place Florida (+40; 290-302-300=892). UCLA (+18; 288-291-291=870) won the tournament title, while Southern California (+27; 298-280-301=879) took second, and Duke (+29; 290-295-296=881) and Texas (+38; 299-290-301=890) finished third and fourth, respectively.
Hayley Davis (+7; 72-74-74=220) finished in a four-way tie for ninth place, seven strokes behind tournament champion Erynne Lee (E; 72-72-69=213) of UCLA.
“Hayley played really well,” Goble said. “She is a few putts away from winning a couple tournaments. She’s a very solid ball-striker and her putting is improving every day. I really believe the floodgates are going to open for her as soon as she gets that first win and plays really well and makes a lot of putts.”
Emma Carberry (+8; 76-71-74=221) finished one stroke behind Davis and tied for 13th place. Lauren Taylor (+10; 75-75-73=223) tied for 18th place, Laura Lonardi (+23; 79-77-80=236) tied for 60th place and Natalia Perez (+27; 80-82-78=240) tied for 69th place.
“I’m really proud of Emma Carberry, because she wasn’t in the lineup last year but once or twice,” Goble said. “She just has a confidence about her now, and the good thing is that it’s traveling with her. She’s playing hard golf courses and playing them well and shooting good scores.”
The Lady Bears return to action when they play in the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate Championship, Feb. 24-26 in New Orleans.
