Baylor Baseball Ranked No. 1 For First Time In Program History

WACO (April 23, 2012) -- Baylor baseball is ranked No. 1 nationally for the first time in program history. The Bears shared the top spot with Kentucky in the latest Collegiate Baseball Newspaper poll released Monday afternoon.

Baylor is coming off a three-game sweep over then-No. 2 Texas A&M. Sunday’s win at Baylor Ballpark extended the Bears’ winning streak to a Big 12 Conference-record 24 games. The Bears also improved to a perfect 18-0 in Big 12 play, breaking the record for most consecutive conference victories – Texas won 17 straight in 2010.

Baseball America ranked the Bears No. 3 in their poll released on Monday, while Perfect Game also had the Bears in the third spot and BU came in at No. 4 in the USATODAY/ESPN coaches’ poll. Baylor’s No. 3 ranking from Baseball America ties its highest in the history of that poll, which began in 1981. The Bears were also No. 3 in that poll on May 8, 2000.

Baylor puts its 24-game winning streak on the line with a pair of midweek games against Southland Conference teams this week. The Bears travel to San Antonio to face UTSA at Wolff Stadium at 6 p.m. Tuesday, then return home to host UT Arlington at 6:35 p.m. Wednesday. Baylor’s last loss came on March 13 when the Bears lost a 4-2 lead in the ninth inning at UT Arlington.

Following Wednesday’s game, Baylor hosts No. 25 New Mexico State for a pair of games on Friday and Saturday. First pitch in Friday’s game is scheduled for 6:35 p.m., and Saturday’s game is slated for to start at 12:05 p.m.
