Baylor Drops NCAA Regional Opener

LAFAYETTE, La. (May 18, 2012) -- The No. 23 Baylor softball team dropped a 1-0 decision to No. 16 Stanford (39-17) in the opening round of NCAA Regional play Friday afternoon at Lamson Park in Lafayette, La.

“Courtney Repka pitched a masterful ballgame and deserved to win,” head coach Glenn Moore said. “They converted on their scoring chance and we didn’t. When you get to this part of the season, that’s the difference in winning and losing.”

Repka (16-12) took the loss despite allowing just six hits, one run, walking two and striking out four in the 6.0 inning effort.

Kathy Shelton led the Lady Bears offense with two hits, her team-leading 17th multi-hit game of the season.

Teagan Gearhardt (31-11) threw the complete game for the Cardinal, giving up six hits, walking one, hitting one batter and striking out seven.

With the game scoreless through four innings, Baylor put together its biggest threat. Kelsi Kettler led off the inning with a single up the middle, and pinch runner Shelbi Redfearn was sacrificed over to second on a bunt from Clare Hosack. Sydney Wilson was then hit by a pitch to put runners at first in second with just one out for Shelton, who lined a sharp base hit to right. Redfearn came around third and was held up, but Wilson was caught off the bag coming around second and the throw home was cut off and Wilson found herself caught in a rundown. Redfearn broke for home and was tagged out at the plate, while Wilson and Shelton found themselves at third and second, respectively, with two outs. Kayce Walker followed with a pop up to third to end the threat.

Stanford led off the fifth with a base hit off the foot of Repka by Hanna Winter, and was sacrificed over to second. With two outs, Jenna Rich was intentionally walked and on a 3-2 pitch, Cassandra Roulund hit a ground ball off the diving glove of Jordan Strickland at short and into shallow center to score Winter for the 1-0 Cardinal lead.

Baylor managed just one base runner the rest of the way, a Hosack walk with two outs in the seventh, and BU dropped its first NCAA Regional opening round game in program history.

The Lady Bears will now take on the loser of Louisiana Lafayette and Mississippi Valley State on Saturday at 3:30 pm.
