INDIANAPOLIS (March 5, 2012) -- Baylor’s track and field team will be represented by 11 student-athletes in eight events at the NCAA Indoor Championships on March 9-10 in Boise, Idaho, the NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s Track and Field Committee announced Monday.
Baylor’s group will feature five women in five separate events, while the men will have two individuals and a group of four in the 4x400-meter relay to represent the team in three events.
On the ladies side, senior triple jumper Jessica Ubanyionwu leads a trio of field event personnel that includes throwers Skylar White and Erin Atkinson. Ubanyionwu made the most of her last chance meet at Arkansas, moving up to fifth in the NCAA in the triple jump last weekend with a leap of 43 feet, 2.25 inches (13.16m). White will enter the weekend ranked sixth with her school-record shot put throw of 56-10, and Atkinson comes in 13th with a school-record weight throw of 68-4.5.
On the track for the women, the 2011 NCAA runner-up in the 60 hurdles, Tiffani McReynolds, is in the field ranked ninth at 8.15 and fresh off her second straight Big 12 titles in the event. Junior Brittany OgunMokun rounds out the women’s side after running a school-record 800 meters at Notre Dame last weekend of 2:05.30 to rank 15th.
For the men, the Bears 4x400-meter relay team of senior Zwede Hewitt, juniors Justin Allen and Drew Seale, and sophomore Blake Heriot was ranked in the top five in the nation for the most of the season, but a flurry of fast times came during last chance meets to push them down to 10th at 3:07.17.
Individually, two newcomers in freshman Patrick Schoenball and junior Everett Walker also made the field in their respective events. Schoenball has been a Bear for only two months, but has made his impact in the middle distances and will enter the NCAAs ranked 13th in the 800 meters at 1:48.47. Walker, a junior college transfer, is rounding back into form after an injury in the fall, and will take a 15th-ranked 200-meter time of 21.08 into the weekend.
