Baylor Golfer Wins Amateur Title

WETHERBY, West Yorkshire (July 8, 2012) -- Baylor women’s golf freshman Emma Carberry tallied a 36-hole score of 7-under 139 to win the 2012 English Women’s Open Mid-Amateur Championship at Wetherby Golf Club.

Carberry shot a 2-under 73 during the morning round and followed with an impressive 5-under 68 in the afternoon session to post a three-stroke victory Saturday. The victory was the first major win for the Hailsham, England, native, who dedicated the win to her late grandfather, Eric Derry.

“I lost my Grandad in April and this is for him,” Carberry told shortly after her victory. “He used to say to me: ‘Isn’t it time you a tournament?’”

The championship was disrupted by bad weather. Play was suspended for nearly four hours on Thursday and was completed washed out Friday. Saturday’s competition featured another suspension of 30 minutes. The repeated delays forced a format change from match play to Saturday’s 36-hole stroke-play event.

Carberry, who just completed her freshman year in Waco, credited her experience at Baylor with improving her golf game. “It’s been a tough year and I’ve learned a lot about my game,” Carberry told “I’ve worked really hard and I’m a much better player.”

As a freshman, Carberry posted a 79.00 scoring average in four events, competing in 12 rounds.
