Baylor's Ludy Collects Awards, Howard Named Big 12 Newcomer Of The Week

WACO (April 16, 2012) -- Baylor senior catcher Josh Ludy has been named Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week, as selected by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper on Monday. The same publication ranked the Bears No. 3 in its national top 30 poll.

Ludy is the seventh Baylor player to earn National Player of the Week from Collegiate Baseball, and the Bears have had one player honored in each of the last three seasons. Ludy joins Jon Topolski (1998), Kyle Evans (2000), Jared Theodorakos (2002), Cory VanAllen (2004), Raynor Campbell (2010) and Logan Verrett (2011) on Baylor’s list of Louisville Slugger National Players of the week.

Ludy helped the Bears to a 5-0 week, including a three-game sweep at Kansas State that extended Baylor’s winning streak to 19 games. He hit .647 (11-for-17) with four home runs, 12 RBI, five runs scored and three walks during the week. His 11 RBI in the series at Kansas State broke the Baylor record for most RBI in a Big 12 series.

The Portland, Ind. native hit three home runs in Sunday’s series finale at K-State, marking the seventh time a Baylor player has homered three times in a game. His seven RBI in the game were the most by a Baylor player since 2004, and he also had the Bears’ first five-hit game since 2009.

Ludy gave the Bears an early lead with a RBI single in the first inning. His two-run homer in the third cut K-State’s lead to 5-3, his solo homer leading off the fifth extended Baylor’s lead to 7-5, and his three-run homer in the eighth erased a 9-7 deficit and put the Bears in front 10-7. Ludy also singled in the 10th inning.

Ludy also had a two-run homer, a single and three walks in Saturday’s game, and he hit a game-winning two-run single to break a 2-2 tie in the seventh inning of Friday’s series opener. He went 2-for-4 with one run and one RBI in Tuesday’s win over Louisiana-Monroe.

For the week, Ludy reached base at a .667 clip (14-for-21) and posted a 1.353 slugging percentage. He had multiple-hit games and drove in at least one run in all four games played, and he went 9-for-14 in the three-game series at Kansas State. With 12 RBI during the week, Ludy raised his Big 12-leading total to 45 on the season, and his 24 RBI in Big 12 play are 11 more than any other player in the league.

The Bears jumped two spots to No. 3 in the top 30 poll after improving their Big 12 record to a perfect 15-0 with their fifth straight series sweep. Baylor’s 15-game Big 12 winning streak is the third-longest in the league’s history, trailing only Texas (17 in 2010) and Texas A&M (16 in 2008). Baylor’s 19-game overall winning streak is one shy of the program record that was established in 1985.

Baylor is also ranked No. 6 by Baseball America and No. 9 in the USATODAY/ESPN coaches top 25 poll. The Bears take on Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in a pair of midweek games at Baylor Ballpark, followed by the final Big 12 edition of the Battle of the Brazos against No. 2 Texas A&M this weekend.
