The McLennan Highlanders fell to the Hill Rebels 92-91 in overtime Saturday at The Highlands.
The Highlanders opened the game on a 7-0 run an extended the lead to 12 with 13:25 to go in the first half. Hill rallied, cutting the lead to six several times down the stretch but MCC extended the lead back to double digits at intermission, 44-34.
Hill chipped away at the Highlander lead, keeping it to single digits throughout the second half. The Rebels tied the game at 81 with 37.2 seconds on the clock to force overtime.
The two teams traded baskets in the extra period. Hill's Tramique Sutherland went 1-2 from the free throw line with 3.33 seconds to go to giving the Rebels the one-point advantage. MCC had a chance to steal the win at the buzzer but Shawn Prudhomme's 3-pointer bounced off the iron.
In women's action, the McLennan Highlassies defeated the Hill Lady Rebels 69-54.
Hill's Kiara Taylor scored eight straight points to open the game. The Lady Rebels led 17-10 with 11:22 to go in the half. MCC responded with a 10-0 run in the next two minutes to take the 20-17 lead. Hill tied the game on the next possession and the teams traded baskets down the stretch. The Highlassies scored three points in the final minute of the half to lead 38-34 at the break.
MCC began to pull away midway through the second half, increasing the lead to 15 with 8:30 remaining in the game. Hill fought back, cutting the lead to eight, 60-52, with two minutes to play. The Highlassies ended the game on a 9-2 run to seal the win.
Shanice Davis led MCC with 17 points. Dominique Taylor and Cha'Zaye Wright added 15 and 11, respectively.
The Highlassies return to action on Wednesday, traveling to Cisco for a 5:30 p.m. contest. The Highlanders will face Southwestern Christian at 4 p.m. on Feb 2 in Terrell.
