WACO (June 25, 2013) -- McLennan Community College has tabbed Mitch Thompson as the new head coach of the Highlander baseball program.
The move was approved by the school Tuesday evening.
Thompson has more than 20 years of coaching experience with stints at Mississippi State University, Radford University, Auburn University and most recently at Baylor University.
As an assistant coach, he helped lead 17 teams to the NCAA National Tournament and three to the College World Series in Omaha, Neb.
Thompson was named the 2006 Baseball America/American Baseball Coaches Association National Assistant Baseball Coach of the Year.
He has served as the featured speaker at the 2005 American Baseball Coaches Association National Convention, the 2011 Legacy Outfitters National Convention, and high school coaches' association conventions in Louisiana, Michigan, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas.
Thompson has a bachelor’s of science in physical education from Fort Hays State University and a master’s of education in physical education from Mississippi State University.
In addition to his coaching duties, Thompson will teach health and physical education classes.
