San Antonio, TX – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor football team will make its first regular season trip to San Antonio since the program’s inaugural game in 1998 when the Cru takes on Trinity University in a 6:00 PM kickoff this Saturday. The two teams have played each other seven times, but have not met since the First Round of the 2007 NCAA Division III National Championships. UMHB won that match-up 52-23 and the Cru has won three straight over the Tigers since dropping the first four meetings between the two programs. The last five of those meetings have come in the postseason after UMHB and Trinity also played in the 1998 and 1999 regular seasons.
The Tigers topped the Cru 37-14 in the first game in UMHB football history back in 1998. A lot has changed for both of these programs since that initial meeting, but there are still quite a few similarities.
“We know that they are going to be very well-prepared and very well coached,” Cru head coach Pete Fredenburg said. “This is a big game for us, because it is our next game and we have to be focused and ready to play every time we step on the field.”
UMHB will enter the game with a 2-0 record after beating then #3-ranked Wesley College 32-25 last Saturday in Dover, Delaware. The Cru has matched the highest national ranking in program history by earning the #2 spot in both the American Football Coaches Association and D3football.com Top 25 Polls. UMHB is also closing out the non-conference portion of the 2012 schedule and is in the middle of the first three-game, regular season road swing in the history of the program. Trinity is 2-1 on the year and dropped out of the top 25 polls after suffering a 62-35 defeat at the hands of Sul Ross State University last Saturday in Alpine.
