Tyler (October 2, 2012) -- The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor men’s golf team improved by five shots on the final day and took second place at the Al Jones Memorial Tournament Tuesday in Tyler.
The UMHB men fired a 304-299=603 team total and finished 18 strokes behind tournament host U.T.-Tyler’s first-place total of 292-293=585. Trinity University claimed third place with a 307-300=607, U.T.-Tyler’s Orange team took fourth at 306-304=610 and Louisiana College rounded out the top five with a 314-305=619. Concordia Texas fired a 316-305=621 for sixth place, U.T.-Dallas finished seventh with a 315-307=622, Schreiner University’s 310-313=623 was good for eighth and Mississippi College (307-324) and Hardin-Simmons University (321-310) tied for ninth place with 631’s. Centenary College finished 11th with a 322-310=632 and Hendrix College was 12th with a 327-323=650 team total. The two-day, 36-hole event was played on a par-71, 6,944-yard layout at The Cascades Golf Club in Tyler.
Robby Schimmels won the individual championship after shooting 74-70=144 and winning a scorecard playoff with U.T.-Tyler’s John Dukes (72-72). Justin Judkins tied for eighth place after firing a 74-75=149, Pablo Mena Medrano posted a 76-76=152 to tie for 13th place, Stayton Lindeman tied for 33rd place with an 80-78=158 and Ryan Berry recorded an 83-79=162 to tie for 42nd place.
The Cru men will now have three weeks off from tournament play. UMHB will return to action with the Alamo City Classic on October 22nd and 23rd. That tournament will be played at River Crossing Golf Club in San Antonio.
