Belton (August 17, 2012) -- The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor football team put on full pads for the first time in the 2012 fall camp Friday morning. The Cru went through a spirited, two-hour, full-team practice closed out with the traditional first-practice “Oklahoma” full-contract drill to close out the workout. It was also just the second day of full-squad workouts after the team split practice sessions between newcomers and returners for the first three days of camp. UMHB returns seven offensive starters and has four starters back on the defensive side of the ball. The opening day in pads also gave players a chance to make an impression on the coaching staff.
“Everybody was out here trying to prove something and it felt great to put the pads on for the first time since that loss last December,” Cru junior defensive end Korey Steward said. “It went as good as it could have gone, we just have to keep getting better every day.”
The team will go through the first two-a-day practices of the fall camp on Saturday. Those practices will be held at the football practice fields at the Cru Sports Plex. UMHB will then resume its normal practice schedule of one afternoon practice per day with classes starting on Monday.
The Cru kicks off the 2012 season with a 6:00 PM home game against Kean University on September 8th. UMHB will then open the first three-game regular season road stretch in program history with a game at traditional rival and 3rd-ranked Wesley College the following weekend. All three of the Cru’s non-conference opponents advanced to the NCAA Division III National Championships last season and combined for a 42-5 record.
