BELTON (March 16, 2013) -- The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team split the second day of play against Howard Payne with a 1-0 loss to the Yellow Jackets in the first game and a 9-0 win in the second. UMHB moves to 9-9 on the season and 4-4 in American Southwest Conference action while Howard Payne moves to 10-9 overall and 5-1 in conference play.
The Yellow Jackets secured the 1-0 win in the top of the fourth when Tylene Middleton drove in Katie Poerner from second base with an RBI single. Tori Gomez had the lone hit in the game for the Cru with a single to left field while the Yellow Jackets recorded three hits. Rebekah Ragsdale took the loss for UMHB, striking out eight batters and walking two.
The Cru exploded offensively in the second game to secure the 9-0 win. Ariel Kemmerer gave UMHB an early lead in second game with an RBI double in the bottom of the second. UMHB added two more runs in the bottom of the third inning with an RBI double from Gomez and an RBI single from Dayton Kunz. Kelsey Vann hit an RBI single in the bottom of the fourth while Kemmerer added two more RBI with a double in the bottom of the fifth and Bevers drove in a run with an RBI single. Caitlin Bollier rounded out UMHB’S offense with two-RBI single, ending the game in six innings.Ariel Kemmerer earned the win for UMHB on the mound, allowing just one hits and striking out three batters. UMHB recorded 15 hits and two errors while the Yellow Jackets had one hit and three errors.
The Cru will return to action next weekend with a pair of doubleheaders at Texas Lutheran on March 22nd and 23rd beginning at 1 p.m. both days. The Cru will return home Monday, March 25th with a doubleheader against Pacific Lutheran beginning at noon.
